Isle of Harris

Harris is the southern and more mountainous part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Although not an island itself, Harris is often referred to as the Isle of Harris. A person from Harris is known as a Hearach.

Harris is most likely to be the island referred to as Adru (meaning thick, stout or bulky) on Ptolemy's map of the British Isles. In Old Norse, a Hérað was a type of administrative district, and the name may derive from that. An alternative origin is the Norse Haerri, meaning "higher" - a reference to the high hills, especially in comparison with the much flatter Lewis lying to the north. Most of the place names on Harris are Gaelicized Old Norse.

Taigh Iomhair

Tel: 01859 502225

Taigh Iomhair is a traditional stone built cottage which originally had a thatched roof. It was the croft-house on this croft until 25 years ago when the current croft house was built. It then remained unocuppied for a number of years until twelve years ago when we decided to renovate it and this has brought it to a very comfortable and cosy standard while retaining it's character as far as possible.

The cottage is in a very pleasant and peaceful setting with a sea view across to the island of Scalpay, the bays area on the East coast of Harris and the Isle of Skye in the distance.

Sea-birds are an everyday sight and seals and otters put in a regular appearance to have a look at what is happening on shore!!

Across the bay from the cottage is the island of Scalpay (population approx 300) and it is now accessible by bridge which is one mile from the cottage. On Scalpay you will find a post office and shop where you can buy newspapers and basic groceries.

Cartwheel Bothy

Tel: 01859 540421

Cartwheel Bothy's first conversion was many years ago and served a dual purpose as the Ministers office and as the old Scalpay fire brigade HQ!  We completed renovating in November 2011 and it's been a labour of love converting this into a holiday cottage. It's now cosy but at the same time functional, with modern appliances, stylish and clean – it would make a romantic honeymooners venue or just a retreat for those wanting to 'get away from it all'. It would also make a great base for anglers, walkers and birdwatchers.

Cartwheel Bothy was designed with couples in mind so is ideal for that romantic getaway, or just to relax and enjoy each others company.  If you have a child, there is plenty of room for a travel cot or occasional bed.  We thought to add a double sofa bed in the lounge if you have friends wanting to stay for a night, so in theory the Bothy will sleep four.
