Exmoor
|
Exmoor is
loosely defined as an area of hilly open moorland in west Somerset
and north Devon in South West England, named after the River Exe the
source of which is situated in the centre of the area, 2 miles NW of
Simonsbath. Exmoor is more precisely defined as the area of the
former synonymous ancient royal hunting forest, officially surveyed
1815-1818 as 18,810 acres in in extent. Even more precisely Exmoor
is defined as the remnant of the royal forest of 18,810 acres
allotted to the king in 1815, equating to 12/22nds of the total, in
acres 10,262 1/4, which was sold to John Knight (1765–1850) in 1818,
which comprises the present Exmoor Parish, whose parish church is
situated in Simonsbath. The moor has given its name to a National
Park, which includes the Brendon Hills, the East Lyn Valley, the
Vale of Porlock and 55 kilometres (34 mi) of the Bristol Channel
coast. The total area of the Exmoor National Park is 692.8 square
kilometres (267.5 sq mi), of which 71% is in Somerset and 29% in
Devon. |

Wintershead Holiday Cottages

Just one of our properties
Tel:
01643 831222
Wintershead has a truly stunning, rural location in Exmoor National
Park. Close to the Devon/Somerset border and easily accessible from
the North Devon link road, we provide our guests with luxury self
catering cottage accommodation in spectacular surroundings. If you
are looking for holiday accommodation where you can really get away
from it all and relax in quality, well-equipped cottages full of
character in beautiful moorland surroundings, then Wintershead can
provide your perfect holiday destination.
Wintershead is in a beautiful location in the heart of Exmoor. Set in
11 acres of beautiful grounds, it is no longer a working farm, but
is surrounded by farmland and the open moor. Although we are in a
wonderfully rural spot, there are plenty of nearby villages, pubs
and restaurants where you can shop and enjoy a meal out. The tiny
village of Simonsbath is about 3 miles away, and Exford a further 5
miles. South Molton in Devon is a delightful country market town
about 10 miles away. There are several country pubs offering
excellent food all within a short distance from Wintershead.
Exmoor is a great place for a holiday at any time of the year,
particularly in spring and early summer. This part of the West
Country is relatively undiscovered by mass tourism, and parts of the
high moor can still give you a feeling of being in a wilderness,
with only the sounds of the moorland birds to disturb the peace. The
months of April, May and June are especially good for an Exmoor
holiday, when the countryside is bursting with new life.
